Short Description

A critical exploration of the socio-cultural concepts of childhood and the impact these have on particular aspects of children's experiences with particular emphasis on childhood practice contexts.

Timetable

Two hours twilight (with a pre-recorded resource supplied one week in advance of each session) session normally taking place on a Wednesday evening for six consecutive weeks

Assessment

Students:

■ should present their understanding of contemporary childhood, drawing on a variety of theoretical disciplines making links to relevant literature. Students should also investigate the factors that shape childhood and consider whether theories and concepts of childhood are fixed universal. This should take the form of an academic poster (50% weighting - 1500 word equivalent)

■ will discuss and analyse, in the form of an essay, how concepts of childhood influence current government legislation and documentation and how these concepts are evidenced in their own practice and perspectives, with the aim of defining children's status within Childhood Practice. (50% weighting - 1500 words +/-10%).

■ introduce learners to the socio-cultural concepts of childhood and the ways in which these are constructed.

■ explore the concepts of the child in today's society and how these relate to Childhood Practice

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

 

■ Discuss and critique some definitions of childhood in today's society by drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives and relevant literature

■ Investigate the factors that shape childhood and consider whether theories and concepts of childhood are fixed or universal.

■ Critically analyse how understandings of childhood are evident in Childhood Practice including their own practice

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
