Taking part will provide you with a deeper insight into contemporary international issues and a better understanding of other’s cultures and viewpoints. Success is rewarded through the award of the GlasGOw Global Citizens’ Award and recognition on your Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR) transcript upon graduation.

There’s nothing to lose, and much to gain – so find out more below and sign up for the scheme!

GlasGOw Global is designed to be a portal to all the fantastic opportunities available in Glasgow, as well as further afield, that you can take in in order to internationalise your profile and gain a global perspective! There are three tiers:

  1. Engage with the international scene at the University of Glasgow by learning a new language, joining an internationally orientated organisation, or become a student mentor for incoming international students!
  2. Explore by under taking a short-term work-based placement or period of study at another campus – an excellent way to gain an insight into another culture!
  3. Exchange through spending time studying abroad at a partner university.

Earn points from any of these tiers and, once you gain enough, you may be awarded a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award depending on your level of participation!

Engage

Just because you don’t leave Glasgow doesn’t mean you can’t earn points! The Engage branch of the GlasGOw Global award recognises the benefits of engaging with international causes, organisations, and academics. There are five specific ways to earn points that fall within the Engage branch:

  1. Engage with languages - Learn a new or develop an existing language with GlasGOw Global!  Join one of the many Conversation Corners meet-ups to improve your language skills with native speakers or returning exchange students, or earn points for taking a language class at the University of Glasgow.
  2. Engage with other cultures - Act as a student mentor for incoming international students or become an active member of an international club or society. Find out more about the Glasgow University International Society and the Erasmus Student Network (University of Glasgow) on Facebook.
  3. Engage with Glasgow - Get involved with outreach projects in the community that contain an international aspect. The GlasGOw Global team will also be in contact with various opportunities when they arise.
  4. Engage with global academia - The University of Glasgow hosts a number of renowned international speakers to provide talks and lectures to students. Attending lectures from speakers on topics involving an international dimension will earn you points.
  5. Engage with the world - The University of Glasgow offers a number of opportunities to spend short periods of time abroad to get a ‘feel' for what Study Abroad experiences may be like.

Exchange

Glasgow’s study exchange programme is one of the oldest and biggest in the country. This is the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities across the world for either a full academic year or for a semester in your second or third year of study.

It’s the chance of a lifetime – to travel to somewhere new, to meet new friends from across the world, and to study in another learning environment. Find out more information about the University of Glasgow’s Study Abroad programme.

Explore

Short-term mobility is an excellent way of gaining an insight into another culture, through a short-term work-based placement or period of study at another campus. Many Glasgow students already do so, be it as a medical or dental students on an elective abroad, or as students of classical studies visiting the sites of Ancient Rome and Greece, or as law students working with German students on comparative law projects, or as engineering students carrying out research projects at a partner campus.

Why not supplement your cv with a course on entrepreneurship taken in Singapore? Or learn a bit about Chinese culture and language? Nearer home, what about a course at Radboud University’s summer school? There is no limit to the number of events you can ask to be recognised and there is also the possibility of developing your own proposal for prior approval.
