Chinese language courses
1. Beginners course (2 classes)
This Chinese beginners’ course is designed for those who have no previous knowledge of Chinese and who would like to have a feel of the language. This course will provide students with a better language environment and allow them to be immersed more in the language. This course will build a good foundation for Level 1 course.
This beginners’ course introduces students to the basic features of the Chinese language: pronunciation of the four tones and the key sounds in Chinese; the different components of Chinese characters; and the main sentence structures. By the end of this 20 hours beginners’ course, you will be able to: communicate in simple Chinese; read at least twenty characters; and write some simple characters. For those of you who want to continue to a higher level of Chinese, this course will give you the essential foundations. We aim to make classes enjoyable and stimulating. You will have plenty of opportunity to practice speaking, reading and writing in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
Duration:
Class 1: 6pm - 8.30pm, Tuesday 1 October 2013 and every Tuesday for 8 weeks except public holidays
Class 2: 10am - 12.30pm, Saturday 5 October 2013 and every Saturday for 8 weeks except public holidays
Fees: £115 For general public, £100 for students, members of staff at the University of Glasgow and senior citizens.
Course Content:
- The correct use of four tones
- The basic strokes of Chinese characters
- Writing personal names in Chinese
- Introduction, greetings and other courtesies
- Personal information, family, interest, work
- Numbers: dealing with dates, time, money
- Enquiring information (The use of general questions with particle ma. And the special questions with the wh-word what, when, who etc.)
- Asking for directions
- Ordering food and drinks
- Understanding simple directions
There is no credit bearing and is not eligible for Individual Learning Account (ILA) funding.
Class sizes: minimum of 5 to a maximum of 15 delegates per course. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

2. Level 1 course (2 classes)
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese for at least 20 hours. At the end of this course, students should have a command of 150 commonly used words and basic grammatical structures, which is a good foundation for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Level 1 Test. The HSK is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities).
HSK (Level 1) test assesses candidates’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level 1 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the A1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Candidates who are able to pass the HSK (Level 1) can understand and use very simple Chinese phrases, meet basic needs for communication and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.
Duration:
Class 1: 6pm - 8.30pm, Tuesday 1 October 2013 and every Tuesday for 8 weeks except public holidays
Class 2: 10am - 12.30pm, Saturday 5 October 2013 and every Saturday for 8 weeks except public holidays

3. Level 2 Course (1 class)
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese for at least 40 hours. At the end of this course, students should and have a command of 300 commonly used words and basic grammatical structures, which is a good foundation for HSK Level 2 Test (Chinese Proficiency Test). The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities)
The HSK (Level 2) assesses candidates’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level 2 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the A2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level 2) have an excellent grasp of basic Chinese and can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
Duration: 6pm - 8.30pm, Thursday 3 October 2013 and every Thursday for 8 weeks except public holidays

4. Level 3 Course (1 class)
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese for at least 60 hours. At the end of this course, students should and have a command of 600 commonly used words and related grammar patterns, which is a good foundation for HSK Level 3 Test (Chinese Proficiency Test). The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities).
The HSK (Level 3) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level 3 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the B1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level 3) can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in their daily, academic and professional lives. They can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.
Duration: 6pm - 8.30pm, Tuesday 1 October 2013 and every Tuesday for 8 weeks except public holidays

5. Level 4 Course (1 class)
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese for at least 80 hours. At the end of this course, students should and have a command of 1200 commonly used words and related grammar patterns, which is a good foundation for HSK Level 4 Test (Chinese Proficiency Test). The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities).
The HSK (Level 4) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level 4 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the B2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level 4) can converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics and are able to communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.
Duration: 6pm - 8.30pm, Thursday 3 October 2013 and every Thursday for 8 weeks except public holidays

6. Level 5 Course (1 class)
This course is designed for students who have studied Chinese for at least 100 hours. At the end of this course, students should and have a command of 2500 commonly used words and related grammar patterns, which is a good foundation for HSK Level 5 Test (Chinese Proficiency Test). The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities).
The HSK (Level 5) assesses test takers’ abilities in the application of everyday Chinese. It is the counterpart of the Level 5 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages and the C1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF). Test takers who are able to pass the HSK (Level 5) can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays and give a full-length speech in Chinese.
Duration: 10am - 12.30pm, Saturday 5 October 2013 and every Saturday for 8 weeks except public holidays

1. Chinese language corner
We run FREE language corner in our office on every Saturday from 12pm to 1pm during the term, you will have the opportunity to practise your Chinese with native Chinese speakers. Everyone is welcome!
2. Private one-to-one classes
If none of the above courses suits you (for example, your level is higher or the time is not convenient for you), we can offer you private one-to-one classes at mutually convenient times (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). The rates for private classes are:
£12.50 per hour if you take less than 10 hours in total, or £10 per hour if you take 10 or more than 10 hours in total. If you are a student, member of staff at the University of Glasgow, or OAPs, we offer a flat rate of £10 per hour.
We can offer a free one-hour consultation session for you to discuss your learning requirements with our language teacher and design a tailored teaching plan based on your needs.

3. Centre for Open Studies
The Centre of Open Studies at the University of Glasgow also run Chinese language classes at different levels, for more information, please visit http://www.gla.ac.uk/courses/openstudies/
There are currently no events or activities bring run by the Confucius Institute. However, please check again regularly as we will be organising a mid-autumn festival and China related lectures in the coming weeks.
