PLATE TWENTY

Greyfriars Church

The United Secession was formed in 1820 and this liberal body aimed to place greater emphasis on the architecture of its churches. The congregation appointed John Baird I to design Greyfriars', named from the tradition that the land on which it was built was formerly owned by the Franciscans. It was situated on North Albion Street and opened in 1821 at a cost of £8300. This landmark building was demolished in the 1960s.
