Short Description
This course will allow students to develop a critical understanding of sport-specific athlete monitoring systems (and procedures) and provide them with appropriate strategies to effectively present relevant information to decision makers in sport.
Timetable
There are normally 4.5 hours of teaching on Fridays, which may be split over more than one session.
Excluded Courses
None.
Assessment
The course will be assessed by means of in-course assessment (100%), which comprises a poster (25%) with written justification (25%) and a lab report assignment (50%).
Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
Course Aims
This course aims to develop the student's ability to critically assess common approaches used to monitor and analyse sport-specific physical and psychological variables, to assess the validity and reliability of data and sources and to present data in an appropriate format for other sports practitioners.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
■ Critically discuss methods of athlete monitoring used in training and competition;
■ Critically analyse and effectively present data from a range of athlete monitoring systems for training and competition;
■ Quantify the reliability of athlete monitoring systems and processes and their ability to detect change;
■ Critically evaluate the use of data from a range of sources in the analysis of sports performance.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
