Use of Mobile Phones etc. by Students in Examinations
Key information: change of policy relating to the location of mobile telephones or music players and candidates’ bags during examinations.
For whom: Deans, Faculty Secretaries, Heads of Departments, staff who invigilate in examinations.
Summary: Candidates are not permitted to keep mobile telephones or music players about their person during examinations. They are, however, now allowed to keep personal possessions in bags underneath their seats during examinations. It was considered that the current practice of candidates placing bags either outside or at the back of examination halls would not be wholly satisfactory if they were required to keep valuable items, such as mobile telephones, in their bags. The potential fire risk of collections of large numbers of bags was also a concern. Invigilators should monitor candidates closely to ensure that they cannot illicitly access material from bags under their seats during the examination.
