PhD Regulations - Minimum length of study / registration
Key information: A revision of the PhD regulations to reflect current interpretation, in some areas, of the existing regulation on the minimum length of study required before candidates are assessed for a PhD.

Summary: Senate approved a revision of the PhD regulations. This made explicit what was already accepted in some disciplines, that the requirement for three years full-time study might be calculated as three years registration for such study. With this interpretation, the examination process is permitted to take place during the third year, allowing the possibility of the degree to be completed within the three year period.
§1 (c) of Schedule A of the PhD regulations which had stated that candidates must “have pursued such study on a full-time basis for a period of not less than three academic years” is amended to state that they “will have been registered for such study on a full-time basis for a period of not less than three academic years”.
