Certificate of Basic IT Competence - Undergraduate

Key information: the Certificate of Basic IT Competence (CBITC) is no longer a mandatory requirement for any undergraduate award.

For whom: Deans, Faculty Secretaries, Heads of Departments, Advisors of Studies.

Summary: EdPSC agreed that the CBITC should be abolished as a mandatory requirement and that this would be implemented with effect from 2007-08. The justification for this was that the CBITC was no longer required as a majority of newly-admitted students now had already achieved the baseline.

IT training for students will be mainstreamed with IT Services provision. Students will be able to access basic training where it was needed or can develop their skills to a more advanced level should they wish.  The CBITC will no longer be credited on the student transcript; IT Services will, however, issue students with a paper-based Certificate.
