Recruitment and International Office (RIO)
RIO's Mission and Purpose
RIO is an ambitious and dynamic service which strives to innovate and improve.
We are responsible for:
- attracting and admitting talented home and international students;
- encouraging students from disadvantaged backgrounds to realise their potential;
- enabling colleagues to enhance our global reach and reputation through the development and delivery of partnership and business development strategies.
RIO consists of the following teams:
UK Recruitment
The University of Glasgow’s UK Student Recruitment Team is responsible for recruiting UK undergraduate and postgraduate students. The UK Student Recruitment Officers spend much of the year travelling throughout the UK attending Higher Education Fairs and visiting schools. The Team are also responsible for organising the Student Ambassador Scheme at the University. For information on upcoming UK recruitment events please visit Recruitment Events. The team also takes responsibility for both Open Days and Applicants' Visit Day.
International Recruitment
The International Office within RIO works primarily to recruit new international students for the University of Glasgow. The team of International Officers travel regularly overseas to interview potential students, attend education fairs and meet with partner institutions. The team is divided into smaller regional teams which mark the focus of their activities: East Asia, South East Asia, Americas, Middle East and Africa and South and Central Asia.
Widening Participation
The Widening Participation team develop, implement, co-ordinate and monitor initiatives which aim to:
- Increase recruitment of students to Higher Education from areas and groups where there is low participation;
- Provide educational support for all students once they have entered the University in order to improve student retention and to facilitate the successful completion of students' programmes of study;
- Allow flexible provision of learning opportunities.
Student Mobility
Increasing student mobility is a strategic priority for the University. The University is committed to enhancing our students’ understanding and appreciation of other cultures, languages and learning approaches by providing opportunities for all students to engage with the global citizen agenda and to equip them for international career opportunities. Student mobility is a 'two way' process - Glasgow students Studying Abroad, and overseas students spending time in Glasgow. Whilst the latter has obvious benefits to the students visiting our university, it also enhances the cultural richness of our courses, benefiting our total student population.
Recruitment Marketing
The Recruitment Marketing team is responsible for providing marketing support to recruit undergraduate and postgraduate students to the University. The Recruitment Marketing team works closely with the UK and International Recruitment teams, developing campaigns and supporting promotional activity in each market. The team also takes responsibility for many on-campus recruitment events including Afternoon Visits and the Study Abroad Fair as well as centrally-led market research activities. The team work closely with the Recruitment and Conversion Marketing Officers in each of the Colleges.
Internationalisation
Internationalisation is led by the Senior Vice-Principal and International Deans supported by Mairi Darroch, Internationalisation Manager based in RIO. The Internationalisation strategy was approved in 2010 and it articulates our international priorities spanning six cross-cutting themes: the student experience, research and knowledge transfer, partnerships, alumni, staff and local engagement. The International Deans have been developing their regional plans in consultation with colleagues from the Colleges and Services with a particular focus on partnership development, recruitment and mobility and alumni engagement. Further advice about the internationalisation process and in particular, partnership development is available from Mairi Darroch.
Admissions
The Admissions team are responsible for the development and implementation of policies, procedures and processes which ensure that applicants for all undergraduate and postgraduate teaching courses are treated in a fair and transparant way. The effectiveness of the process is key to ensuring that the policy objectives are met through admitting the right quality of students in line with planned capacity and with correct levels of cultural diversity.
