Media Production has the expertise and infrastructure to produce, high quality video and audio material for teaching, research or promotion. To allow the Media Production team to provide the best possible service, please provide as much notice as possible of your needs by completing the form below and emailing it to media@learn.gla.ac.uk.

Live Outside Broadcast production work
We have an outside broadcast system consisting of 4 Cameras, vision mixer and sound desk. We record the University's summer and winter Graduations, and public events such as the Kilbrandon Lecture, Stevenson Lectures and conferences when requested.
Filming (location and studio)
Media Production crews shoot on digital tape stock using Panasonic AJD 900 DVCPRO broadcast camcorders. Audio recording can be made using radio transmitter microphone systems, Gun and handheld microphones. We have a fully functional soundproofed television studio comprised of three Hitachi Z1 DA camera heads on Vinton studio tripods, an extensive lighting grid, and autocue. The studio Gallery equipment includes an 8 channel component vision mixer, 8 channel sound mixer, Caption Generator and the capability of recording onto DVCPRO format, or direct to computer as required. These excellent facilities are regularly hired by the broadcasting industry.
Editing (non-linear and online)
Media Production has 6 non-linear editing systems, 2 x AVID Media Composer Xpress, 2 Avid DV Express Pro, and 2 Final Cut Pro suites, for postproduction and training work. Avid is a proven and market leader in high quality non-linear editing systems. The Avid MC Xpress is a high-end broadcast editing system providing lossless broadcast quality non-linear editing. It has real time effects, sophisticated multi-layered titling and eight channels of audio with equalisation. Edit 1 and 2 are staffed by in-house ex-broadcast professional editors Edit 3 and 4 are available for use by University staff and students with or without an editor. We also have a broadcast standard DVCPRO/SP Betacam edit suite with digital video effects.
Sound Production
Audio recordings can be made in our studio, or on location, and can comprise of single or multiple microphone set-ups. The recordings can be captured onto Digital Audio Tape, digitally edited on computer, and distributed on CD.
DVD Production
From a simple video based DVD presentation to the creation of sophisticated menus with multiple links- we can create a DVD to meet any requirements. DVD creation includes visual design of the menus, acquisition of video or other content as required, editing and encoding of video and compilation and testing of the disk. We can also subtitle the DVD. We can handle every aspect of the production in-house including duplication
Media Production can provide fast turnaround DVD duplication and printing whether you need only a few, or hundreds of disks.
Live and On-Demand Media Streaming
Live events can be streamed and recorded simultaneously from our television studio or from many locations on campus in collaboration with IT Services.
Examples of previous work in these areas include:
- The Graduation video streams which are recorded and streamed on the day of the graduations. The streamed versions are archived by IT Services, in addtion, the Media Production Unit also produce a highly polished edited version available for purchase.
- Stevenson Lectures. This is a series of public lectures on citizenship that are recorded and streamed. The lectures are then archived.

Off-air recording
Media Production offers an off-air recording service for the recording of terrestrial television (BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, C5 and free to view channels) and radio programmes for use within your department under the University's ERA (Educational Recording Agency) licence. Requests must be made using the downloadable booking form below. We also hold a BUFVC Licence, which means we can obtain any past-transmitted programmes, a service for which the BUFVC charges £23.

Duplication
The Media Production team have facilities to make multiple copies of CDs and DVDs. Please use the Tape copying/Off-air recording form to make your requests.
For large numbers of copies please contact Nigel Hutchins or Pam Luthwood in advance of placing your request for costs and timescales.
Video encoding
Video can be encoded to MPEG1 format, QuickTime or Windows Media For use on CDs and computer-based presentations, or for streaming purposes as required.
Media training
We facilitate media training for groups of postgraduate research students and external clients. We provide a 3 camera TV studio, director, vision mixing, radio interviewing and ‘door-stepping’ plus an individual DVD for all participants provided at end of each session.

Video Archive Library
Media Production hosts an extensive tape library for repurposing material in teaching, research and promotional programming, presentations and websites. From footage of Glasgow and the University through the years and seasons, to detailed microscopic filming of Trypanosomes, medical procedures and lab techniques, Royal visits and a myriad of other topics.
