Objectives and Standards
Standards are directly linked to job-task completion. They describe the conditions that must exist before the performance can be rated satisfactory.Examples would be:
- to ensure all grant requests are written, reviewed and submitted to the granting agency / foundation by the required deadlines
- between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on work days, 95% of telephone calls will answered by a staff member within 3 rings and 100% within 5 rings
Objectives are broader in scope, go beyond day-to-day standards. A performance objective describes a future state of achievement and is clearly linked to helping the School/RI/Service or organisation meets its goals and objectives.
Objectives require the reviewer and reviewee to plan for results, not just activities.
An example would be:
- to identify three new grant / funding sources for Cancer Research by July 31, 20XX
- to advise all callers wanting to book courses of the availability of the online booking system and offer to email the web link in order to reduce number of calls per week from 200 to 150 by October 1, 20XX
