Mould removal

The Garscube Cash Book before conservation, showing clear evidence of mould on the cover. (Copyright reserved. University of Glasgow.) Mould is a common problem among archival collections.  The greatest threat to archives comes from active mould, which can rapidly spread through the collections where storage and environmental conditions allow this.  Isolating and treating active mould is an urgent priority where it occurs.

There are archives affected by inactive mould.  Of less immediate threat to collections, inactive mould must also be treated to ensure that it does not reactivate should environmental conditions change.

Vacuuming is the most effective, least damaging method of removing dry, inactive mould from paper archives.  Specialist vacuum cleaners fitted with filters are used, while staff wear appropriate personal protective equipment, particularly surgical gloves and respiratory mask.
