Following a PhD project on the effect of surgical disease on acute phase proteins in equidae, particularly the use of Serum Amyloid A (Vet Rec. 2005 Apr 23;156(17):538-42), I have continued this investigation with a number of satellite projects investigating the use of acute phase proteins to diagnose, monitor and prognosticate disease in the horse. My current clinical research interests include projects on the structure and function of the guttural pouches with particular reference to the condition guttural pouch mycosis. I am also involved in a number of studies investigating the equine upper airway with particular reference to laryngeal and palatal dysfunction. My other interests also include the development of a number of novel surgical procedures. I am particularly interested in the development of standing surgery and its role in equine welfare (Vet Surg. 2005 Nov-Dec;34(6):625-9).

The emergence of MRSA in horses has allowed me to become involved in several epidemiological studies investigating this organism (Vet Microbiol. 2005 Aug 30;109(3-4):285-96.) I currently have research collaboration with groups in Ireland, Denmark and the USA on the projects described above.
