Stevenson Trust for Citizenship
The Stevenson Trust Fund was established in 1921 by a bequest to the University of Glasgow from Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson (1851 – 1944) a Glasgow-born engineer, politician and philanthropist, to fund a Lectureship in Citizenship.
The purposes of the Citizenship Trust Fund are:
- to make provision in Glasgow for instruction in the rights, duties, and obligations of citizens in relation to the city, the state, and the commonwealth of nations
- to promote study, inquiry and research in subjects bearing on local government, national polity, and international community
- and thereby to emphasize the compatibility of civic or local with national patriotism, and of both with full and free international co-operation
From Autumn 2006 to Spring 2010, the Stevenson Fund for Citizenship promoted a series of annual lectures on citizenship themes, held at the University of Glasgow and open to academics, students and the general public. Speakers included politicians, academics, political theorists, journalists, educators and cultural commentators.
The Trust also supports a number of other activities concerned with citizenship, such as conferences and events for schools. Details of all these and the current and recent lecture programmes can be found on this site.
