Archives

The archives of individual businesses and of the related business and trade organisations provide the foundations of business history research. Access to these archives allows historians to assess the development of business at a local, national and international level. The CBHS has close links with Glasgow University Archive Services (GUAS) which holds an unrivalled collection of business records in Scotland. These collections, which were inaugurated by the University's first professor of Economic History Sydney Checkland, reflect the wide range of Scottish business, industry and enterprise and its impact worldwide. The Business Archives Council of Scotland, an independent organisation based at GUAS, is a key player in ensuring the preservation of Scottish business records. It works in partnership with many businesses across Scotland to ensure that their archives are appropriately managed and access to them made available where possible. Further information on business archives can be found on the GUAS website
