Biography

Originally from Stirlingshire, Steven came to the University of Glasgow in 2001 to research for a PhD in sustainable rural development. Prior to this, Steven completed a MSc in Environmental Studies (Strathclyde), a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management (Northumbria) and a HND in Managing Urban Environments (Forth Valley). His undergraduate research investigated the population ecology of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) at three intertidal habitats in the Outer Hebrides (North Uist, South Uist and Barra). Continuing his interest in ecology, Steven undertook postgraduate research into Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) along the River Carron's riparian corridor assessing the distribution, abundance, environmental conditions and effect on native biodiversity. His PhD research concentrated on the ecological attitudes of nature-based and other visitors to Dumfries & Galloway using the New Ecological Paradigm scale (Dunlap et al., 2000) and agritourism in the region.

From 2006 -2008 Steven worked as a research assistant within the Centre for Research into Regional Development (CRRED) developing knowledge transfer events for rural SMEs and conducting research into key sectors in southern Scotland. From 2004 - 2005 Steven worked on behalf of the Crichton Tourism Research Centre (CTRC) on a Leader+ funded project assessing the current usage and future management of the Southern Upland Way (Long Distance Route). Steven is currently co-leader of the land-use management strand within the Solway Centre for Environment & Culture.

Steven will take over as Programme Director for the MSc Applied Carbon Management from 1st August 2012.
