Biography

Dr Carol Hill is the Head of Health and Social Studies at the University of Glasgow, Dumfries Campus with responsibility for managing the: MLitt Managing Health and Wellbeing; MA Liberal Arts (Health and Social Studies); MA (Hons) Health and Social Studies; MA(Hons) Social Work; BA Community Learning and Development; and, the Cert HE Integrated Working with Children and Families. She is also Director of the Crichton Centre for Research in Health and Social Issues.

Research interests

Dr Hill began her academic career as an economic historian gaining a PhD for her thesis on the Maritime Economy of South-West Scotland 1707 - 1850, from the University of Strathclyde. Although she continues to research and publish in this field, in more recent years her overarching interests in the political economy and applied health and social policy are reflected in an extensive research portfolio that includes, for example,  European Union funded research into ‘the barriers to women in rural areas achieving their potential’ and 'the engagement of older people in the development of social enterprises for elder care’ along with other funded studies of,‘how young people make their Higher Education choices’and evaluations of ‘Building Healthy Communities’ and the ‘Integrated Assessment Framework’.

Dr Hill regularly reviews books and articles for a range of scholarly publications; undertakes a consultancy role for a number of organisations in the statutary and voluntary sectors, contributes at national and international conferences and is a recipient of the J. Percival Agnew Award and the Grainger Memorial Prize.
