We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Professor Andrew Roe as the new Head of Bacteriology following the departure of Professor José Penadés.

Prof Roe, a University of Aberdeen Microbiology graduate, arrived at the University of Glasgow as a new lecturer in 2006 after completing his PhD with Professor Ian Booth.

His career progression within the Institute saw him start his own research group, which focuses on the model organism Escherichia coli, followed by promotion to Professor in 2018.

Institute director Professor Iain McInnes said: "I am delighted to confirm that Andy Roe will be the new Head of Bacteriology following the departure of José Penadés, and that Gill Douce will continue as deputy. My thanks to them both for their leadership in the area.

"We are of course sad to see José depart to pastures new. Bacteriology has grown enormously in strength under his leadership and I am sure will continue to do so with the new leadership team in place."

A proud Prof Roe added: "As Head of Bacteriology I am excited to start a new chapter for the research area.

"Supporting early career researchers and developing the next generation of microbiologists will be areas of particular focus.

"I am fortunate to have amazing colleagues within the Institute who always step up and help whenever asked, and their assistance and support will be invaluable in the months and years ahead."
