Course content/aims

This two day event is an exciting opportunity for class teachers and senior managers in schools to explore a programme rooted in the best that contemporary psychology and education have to offer.

Seasons for Growth is a loss and grief education programme catering for young people aged 6 - 18 years. It is based on the belief that grief is a normal and valuable part of life itself and that children and adolescents need to be provided with the opportunity to examine how grief as a result of death, separation or divorce, has impacted on their lives. The educative process underpinning Seasons for Growth provides the opportunity for each participant to integrate, at his/her developmental level, the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to understand and to cope with loss and grief.

The purpose of this two day workshop is to equip teachers to assist young people to understand the grief that is experienced because of the loss of a parent or significant other through death, separation or divorce. Attendance at the Seasons for Growth course will enable and qualify educators to run a Seasons for Growth peer support group for young people within the school setting.

Information about the tutor

The course will be led by Mary Lappin who is a Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Glasgow.  She has extensive experience and expertise in the field of Grief and Loss Education and pioneered the introduction of the 'Seasons for Growth' Grief Education programme in Scotland.

Using Exemplars to Improve Attainment in National 5 English

Tuesday 31 October 2023, 9.30am–3.30 pm

Audience

This entirely practical, full-day workshop is aimed at Secondary English teachers, including Probationers, who would like to consider ways of challenging pupils to produce excellent results at National 5 level, using exemplification explicitly.

The cost of the full day course will be £150 per person, including lunch and coffee. The course will be held in the St Andrew's Building, 11 Eldon Street, Glasgow, G3 6NH.

Please bring a laptop computer to the meeting.

Content

  1. The course will begin with a contextualisation of the current discourse on feedback, internationally.
  2. A description of a protocol to support pupils to generate their own feedback.
  3. A synopsis of the key challenges faced by pupils at National 5 with suggestions on how to address them.
  4. Scrutiny of exemplars for both portfolio writing (am) and critical essays (pm).
  5. Participants will work individually/in pairs/groups to create power points/word documents which will support pupils identify the key strengths of each exemplar.
  6. These will be shared with all participants.

Exemplars of creative and discursive writing ranging from 15/15 to 12/15 will be used. The strengths of each script will be identified, and we will also compare each script to the other as well as considering how leaners can develop their writing skills by using non-exemplar materials.
