Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine (Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences)

Dr Terry Quinn is a clinical lecturer in geriatric medicine. His principle research interests are around improving the use of outcome scales for clinical trials; cognitive/mood disorder post stroke and using routinely collected data for novel hypothesis testing.

The work started with Dr Quinn’s MD thesis, “Optimising assessment of disability for clinical practice and clinical trials” continues to attract interest and generate high impact publications; guidelines and book chapters. He has a passion for improving trial outcome analysis and has co-created online training resources for stroke researchers that are now industry standard (modified Rankin Scale; Barthel Index). His work with colleagues in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences around committee review of functional assessment has informed a novel, video based assessment strategy for trials. The methodology developed in Glasgow has been adopted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and European Union (EU FP7) funded international stroke studies. Glasgow continues to provide outcome assessment expertise for these studies.

More recently he has started to build a body of work around dementia assessment. This work encompasses a broad portfolio from basic sciences and genomics to clinical work and systematic review. He is currently leading on dementia related grants from Academy of Medical Sciences, British Geriatric Society and Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland. In collaboration with the Cochrane Collaboration he is developing a battery of systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy of dementia screening tools and was on the writing group for dementia test accuracy research best practice guidance.

Collaboration is a major theme of Dr Quinn’s research and he is currently working with colleagues from various UK and international centres of excellence. Examples include work describing association of haemostasis and cognitive decline (Cardiff and Edinburgh, UK); test accuracy of dementia screening (Oxford, UK); development of a thyroid related quality of life questionnaire (Copenhagen, Denmark) and outcomes assessment following neurosurgery (Baltimore, USA).

Dr Quinn has editorial board positions with Cochrane Clinical Answers (Cochrane Collaboration); PLOSone (Public Library of Science) and Stroke (American Heart Association). He is a member of the guideline writing group for the European Stroke Organisation (ESO); review board for the UK Forum for Stroke Training and is deputy chair of the Scottish Care-Homes Research Collaboration.
