Biography

Ewan is Head of the Healthy Working Lives Group, which he established at the University of Glasgow in 1990. He divides his time between academic activities and provision of clinical Occupational Health and Safety services through his company MacOH Ltd.

Ewan is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London and a Fellow and Past President of the UK Faculty of Occupational Medicine. He is a Founder and Past President of the Occupational Medicine section of the Union of European Medical Specialists. In 2015, by invitation of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Ewan presented the C.O. Sappington Memorial Lecture at the spring American Occupational Health Conference. In 2018, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Faculty of Occupational Medicine for his services to Occupational Health both in Ireland and internationally. Numerous past honorary appointments have included Honorary Colonel of 225 Medical Regiment for 6 years.

Ewan developed the Healthy Working Lives paradigm and this was adopted as policy in Scotland. Subsequently, he stimulated its review which led to the Health Works Policy. During 2011, he chaired the implementation group of the first Health Works pilot to introduce a redesigned musculoskeletal service in the Health Service in Scotland with the aim of ensuring a more patient-centred faster service with a focus on return to maximum function including work, where appropriate.  Ewan also proposed the OHS Extra service which was the forerunner of the “Fit for Work” service across the UK.

Ewan is a member of the Bevan Commission which advises Welsh Government on improving the NHS in Wales and on health and safety programmes. He is also a member of the Disability and Carers Benefits Expert Advisory Group reporting to the Cabinet secretary in Scotland.

Ewan chairs the Academic Forum for Health and Work in the UK and recently reported to the House of Lords on the Value of Occupational Health Research. Through his networks in the UK and his strong links with both the Society of Occupational Medicine and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Ewan continues to work tirelessly for universal access to Occupational Health in the UK.

Previous experience includes being Director of Salus Occupational Health & Safety, which he created, and is the largest NHS-based Occupational Health & Safety service in the UK. Other roles have included Chief Medical Officer to Alcan (UK and Europe), Chief Medical Officer to IBM (UK), Chair of the IBM European OH Board (EU, Middle East and Africa) and Principal Medical Officer for the Yorkshire Coal Field. He started his career in Occupational Medicine after training in internal medicine and subsequently in the UK Coal-Mining Industry.

He is a member of the Bevan Commission which advises Welsh Government on improving the NHS in Wales and on health and safety programmes. He is also a member of the Disability and Carers Benefits Expert Advisory Group reporting to the Cabinet secretary in Scotland.

Research interests

Ewan’s research includes extending working lives, ageing workers, the working age population, prevention and control of sickness absence, ill health retirement and he undertook the first OH study of high-altitude climbing Sherpas, as a way of combining business with pleasure.

His research includes a focus on the health problems caused by work, ageing workers and maintenance of their functional capability. His focus is also on the health problems caused by worklessness. He believes that worklessness is the major contributor to increased morbidity, mortality, health inequalities and social exclusion in Scotland. He led a major study of 13,000 workless individuals going through the welfare to work programme and the factors which facilitate and hinder return to work.

Ewan established with others, the Scottish Observatory for Work and Health, which was based in his Group at the University and research projects include evaluation of return-to-work initiatives, the biological changes underpinning ageing and health inequalities.

Ewan has also been actively involved in Covid-19 research from an occupational health perspective with a BMJ Editorial on safely returning the clinically vulnerable back to work and a UK Biobank study on ‘at risk’ occupational groups for severe Covid-19 illness.

Since 2018, he has been Chair of the Academic Forum for Health and Work in the UK and he was a co-author of the widely publicised report on ‘The Value of Occupational Health research’ which he presented in 2019 at a launch at the House of Lords, hosted by Lord Blunkett. Research income over the past 20 years has exceeded £9 million and includes research for the MRC (Medical Research Council); the Scottish Government; NHS, and the HSE (Health & Safety Executive).
