Biography

I am a Biostatistician at the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, part of the University of Glasgow, and Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit.

I have a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Stirling, an MSc (by research) in Statistics from the University of Glasgow, and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Glasgow.

I am delighted to work in the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics (RCB), where we work on everything from small epidemiological studies to large-scale clinical trials.  Our work is collaborative, with academics, NHS staff and commercial organisations, locally, nationally, across the UK and internationally.  Our aim is to conduct research that has the potential to improve the treatment of patients and change the practice of medicine.  (These last two sentences are shamelessly pinched from our webpage):

https://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/healthwellbeing/research/robertsoncentreforbiostatistics/#welcome

I co-founded the Athena SWAN working group: LGBTQ+ staff and student issues, aspirations and development.  I continue to co-chair this group, and I sit on the Self-Assessment Team (SAT).  Please do not hesitate to get in contact should you have any questions, suggestions, or should you wish to join us in our work!

I am neurodivergent and I have a particular interest in how neurodivergency and mental health are supported in the workplace.

I am a STEM Ambassador (https://www.stem.org.uk/) and fully promote teaching our next generation about the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics.

I am learning British Sign Language with Deaf Action (https://www.deafaction.org/) .

Research interests

I am interested in all areas of medicine, and how we can improve the future of treatment.  At the Robertson Centre, we welcome studies in all areas of medicine other than cancer, which is researched by our partner, the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research.

I encourage anyone with a research idea or proposal to get in touch with us via:

https://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/healthwellbeing/research/robertsoncentreforbiostatistics/about/contactus/

At RCB, we offer an Advisory service, in which we can help you with anything from writing a grant proposal to presenting results.  Please contact us using the link above should you have any questions or wish to book a meeting.

Supervision

I currently co-supervise Hanadi Mohammed Y Alzahrani, along with Dr Benn Macdonald (primary supervisor) from the School of Mathematics and Statistics and Professor John Cleland from the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics.  Hanadi is pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics, with a focus on applying Bayesian modelling to heart failure data.

Completed PhD students include:

  • Doctor Kenneth Magion, PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine awarded in 2019.  Co-supervised by Professor Colin Berry,
  • Doctor Annette Marie Maznyczka, Doctor of Philosophy (MVLS), awarded in 2020.  Co-supervised by Professor Colin Berry and Dr Margaret McEntegart,
  • Doctor Hala Fouad Azhari, PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences awarded in 2020.  Co-supervised by Professor Jesse Dawson.

Teaching

I currently teach the module Clinical Trials: Principles and Methods as part of the MSc degree Precision Medicine and Pharmacological Innovation, in collaboration with the Universities of Aberdeen and Dundee.  This clinical trials module equips students with information ranging from the history of clinical trials of medicinal products (CTIMPs), to the legislation and the processes involved in running and finally analysing a clinical trial.

In previous years, I have taught CPD courses in Introduction to Medical Statistics, and Medical Statistics: Regression modelling, both using SPSS. However, we have no future dates scheduled for these.

Alongside Professor Colin McCowan and Dr John Minton, I co-wrote and delivered a two-day course: An Introduction to Statistics using R.  This was funded and run by the FARR Institute.  The Farr Institute was a UK-wide research collaboration involving 21 academic institutions and health partners in England, Scotland and Wales.  As expected, funding for the FARR Institute ended in 2018, when its larger-scale successor, Health Data Research (HDR) UK, was established.
