Biography

Our research interests centre on using diverse approaches, ranging from biophysical to physiological, to understand how photosensory systems operate to coordinate and shape plant growth and development. Our research on UV/blue light photoreception in particular has resulted in major advances in the field of photobiology, including the identification of the long sought after photoreceptor for phototropism, phototropin and more recently the mechanism of action of the elusive plant UV-B photoreceptor UV Resistance Locus 8. Our earlier work also pioneered the discovery and photochemical characterization of the Light-Oxygen and Voltage sensing (LOV) domain, which is now frequently used to develop new optogenetic tools to regulate enzymatic activities through light-dependent protein caging/uncaging; dimerization/clustering or monomerization/unclustering of cell signalling components. Together with Dr. Anna Moroni (University of Milan), we have recently been successful in using this framework to generate a light-gated potassium channel with applications in neural silencing and the optical control of behavior responses. Our work also extends to developing new oxygen-independent fluorescent reporter tools to non-invasively track viral and bacterial infections. My deep interests in photobiological systems and synthetic biology applications were cemented during my postdoctoral studies with Dr. Winslow Briggs (Carnegie Institution of Washington, Stanford). After my postdoctoral studies, I was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2002 to establish my own research group at the University of Glasgow focused on understanding the molecular basis of plant photoreceptor function and signaling. In 2003 I received the New Investigator of the Year Award from the American Society for Photobiology and was awarded the Finsen Lecture Award from the International Congress of Photobiology in 2009 for my research contributions to the photobiological sciences. Through my wide research interests in photobiological sensory systems, I have been a regular participant and speaker at biologically and synthetically-orientated international conferences in this topic and will Chair the 2016 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Photosensory Receptors and Signal Transduction in Glaveston, Texas (Jan 24-29). I also serve on the editorial board for several plant science journals and contribute to scientific textbooks, including “Sunlight as Signals” for the sixth edition of Plant Physiology.
