Anton 450The Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, has been reappointed to his post for further five years, taking his tenure to 2024. The decision was made by the University Court on 21 June 2017.‌

Professor Muscatelli, who was knighted in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours, was first appointed Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow in October 2009. From 2007-2009 he was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University. Prior to 2007 he held various roles at the University of Glasgow including Vice Principal - Strategy, Budgeting and Advancement (2004-07); Daniel Jack Professor of Political Economy (1994-2007); and Professor and Lecturer, Department of Economics (1984-94).

Commenting on his reappointment, Professor Muscatelli said: “I am delighted that Court has decided to extend my period as Principal and Vice Chancellor until 2024. This was the University at which I was educated as an undergraduate and where I spent my formative years as an academic. It has been an enormous privilege to lead the University of Glasgow for the past eight years. The coming period will be both challenging and exciting as we develop our campus in a £1bn project to provide world class teaching, learning and research facilities.”

Dr David Duncan, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary of Court at the University of Glasgow, said: “Professor Muscatelli has provided outstanding leadership at a time of enormous change. Under his stewardship student numbers and research income have increased, our league table rankings have improved and Glasgow has become a truly international university. The next few years will see our campus transformed as we develop the former Western Infirmary site. Court was clear that Professor Muscatelli is the right person to oversee this development and to champion the University of Glasgow over the next five years. I should like to add my own personal congratulations to him.”

Professor Muscatelli chairs the Scottish Government’s Standing Council on Europe, a non-political group set up to provide expert advice to Scottish ministers on protecting Scotland’s relationship with the EU. He is a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisers. From September 2017 he will assume the role of Chair of the Russell Group of Universities – the UK’s leading group of research-intensive universities.

He is a member of the Board of the Scottish Funding Council, a Director of USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme), Chair of the Trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Europe, a member of the Board of Glasgow Life, and Chair of the Commission on Economic Growth for the Glasgow City Region. He was a member of the steering group of Lord Stern's Review into university research funding, commissioned by Jo Johnson MP, Universities Minister. From 2008-10 he was Convenor of Universities Scotland and Vice-President of Universities UK.
