The University of Glasgow has received the keys to the new Teaching & Learning Centre at the South Glasgow University Hospital.

The £25m facility will be operational from July and will provide a world-class training environment for the clinical years of the undergraduate medical degree students, postgraduate students and NHS professionals undertaking continuing professional development courses.

Teaching and Learning Building at the SGUH

The four-storey building houses three floors jointly developed by the University and the NHS devoted to learning and teaching facilities, including a 500-seat auditorium, as well as social and public spaces, conference spaces, teaching spaces, a learning resources centre, clinical skills facility and a teaching laboratory.

The top floor will house the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre, bioinformatics company Aridhia and a number of incubator units for industry. This will provide an ideal environment to drive innovation in precision medicine.

The building’s co-location with the other key academic infrastructure developments – a £5m Clinical Research Facility and £23m Imaging Centre of Excellence – will expedite the translation of clinical findings into treatments and patient benefits.

Professor Anna Dominiczak, Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, said: “The new teaching and learning centre will provide unrivalled facilities for medical students and NHS professionals alike, as well as an excellent base for industry and the Stratified Medicine Scotland – Innovation Centre.

“Our ‘triple helix’ partnership with the NHS and industry is helping to put Glasgow at the forefront of patient care and research."

Robert Calderwood, Chief Executive of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde said: “NHSGGC and the University of Glasgow have had a close working relationship for many, many years and this new centre will further cement the bond between the NHS and the University.

“This is a major investment in providing world class teaching and learning facilities for future generations of doctors and clinical staff.”
