Professor Stuart Reid has announced that he is leaving the University of Glasgow to take up the position of Principal of the Royal Veterinary College, London.

Currently the Head of the Vet School and formerly Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Professor Reid will take up his new post on 1st January 2011.

Professor Anton Muscatelli led the University’s tributes to the work of Professor Reid and wished him all the best for the future.

He said: “We are both delighted and disappointed at this news. Delighted that Stuart will be moving on to such a prestigious position, but also disappointed that we will be losing such a talented colleague, who has contributed so much to the success of this university.

“Under Stuart’s stewardship the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and now the School of Veterinary Medicine, has gone from strength to strength. He has provided inspirational leadership and overseen the development of important milestones in the development of the School.

“He will be greatly missed, not only by those from the Vet School, but by many people right across the University where he made such a positive impression. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Professor Reid, son of a Glasgow vet and himself a Glasgow alumnus, began his career in 1987 as an Assistant Veterinary Surgeon in Aberdeenshire before joining the University of Glasgow as a Clinical Research Scholar in 1988.  Following post doctoral work from 1992 to 1996, Reid was appointed to the first joint Chair between the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow in 1997, as Professor of Veterinary Informatics and Epidemiology.  Elected a Fellow of RSE in 2001, he became Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.

Professor Reid was appointed Dean of the Faculty in 2005. While in post he oversaw a number of important developments including the construction of a £15M Small Animal Hospital and the £2.4M Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety.

The Faculty also retained its coveted accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education in 2006 and is a very popular destination for many veterinary students from North America and across the world.

The 2008 RAE exercise saw the Faculty placed top in Scotland for research and joint first in the UK, and topped the UK leagues tables for student satisfaction in 2010.

Professor Reid said: "It is with very mixed emotions that I will be leaving Glasgow. The role of Principal at the Royal Veterinary College will be an exciting and challenging job – like Glasgow, RVC has an international reputation and in recent years Quintin McKellar, also a Glasgow alumnus, has led the organisation to significant success. I look forward to this new position.

"However, I have spent the vast majority of my career at Glasgow and the greater part of my life at the University, including my time as a student. Parting is never easy, but it is particularly difficult when one has so many long-standing friends and when one regards the place as home. I recognise that I am enormously privileged to be joining a great College – but I am leaving a great School.

"I have every confidence that my colleagues in Glasgow will go from strength to strength and I can assure them that Glasgow will have no bigger supporter anywhere than me.”
