Professor of Communication and Social Change explores media coverage of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and attitudes of the television audience

A newly published book co-written by Professor Greg Philo and Mike Berry of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, examines TV news coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how this coverage relates to the understanding, beliefs and attitudes of the television audience.

The book entitled "Bad News from Israel" has attracted a large amount of national press interest including BBC, Channel 5 and the Guardian newspaper. The work was undertaken with support from the Economic and Social Research Council with the intention to discuss the pressures and structures within which the media work. It is a very extensive study with an audience sample of over 800 people and a detailed analysis of TV news over a two-year period. This work also raises a series of important theoretical issues in mass communications.
