The Music Industry and Music Industry Policy in Scotland - research to be presented at University of Glasgow seminar on Tuesday 27 May.

The Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the University of Glasgow is hosting a seminar on 'The Music Industry and Music Industry Policy in Scotland' on Tuesday 27 May at 10.00am - 1.00pm in the Andrew Stewart Cinema, Gilmorehill Centre, University of Glasgow.

The seminar has been organised in association with Martin Cloonan of the University of Glasgow, John Williamson and Simon Frith, authors of the recently published Scottish Enterprise Report, 'Mapping the Music Industry in Scotland'.

The seminar will present the findings of the Mapping Report for the first time as a way of starting a public debate on Scottish music policy. The authors will present evidence on the structure, health and problems of Scottish music businesses.

But, as Martin Cloonan explains, ' The main business of the day will be to discuss the future of music and music policy in Scotland in the light of our findings.'

The report raises a number of relevant questions -

  • Is there a single music industry in Scotland?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Scottish music industry?
  • Does it make sense to think about music business in national terms?
  • Can the music industry be treated in the same way as other creative industries?
  • What kinds of state intervention or support are justified or helpful?
  • Does the Scottish Executive actually have the power to make any difference?
