Building Education for the Future at UofG

 

The Transforming the Curriculum workstream aims to offer interdisciplinary learning opportunities for all students at the University of Glasgow as a key component of the Curriculum For Life (C4L)

 

Interdisciplinary Learning Projects 1 (ILP) one of the first C4L courses under development and will be the flagship course for Curriculum for Life. The Curriculum

 

Transformation Workstream supported by ILP design team, hosted a workshop with staff and students. The workshop invited participants to experience and reflect upon gaming as a key component of the new course.

 

A group of 36 students, professional services staff and academics were challenged to work as teams to respond to real world challenges.  The aim was to achieve the designated team goal while also keeping tabs on the overall health of the world around them. This required the teams to strategize, take risks, challenge their assumptions and bargain with other teams. The game was active and fast paced and supported by a reflective session afterwards to enable participants to process and discuss their approaches and learning.

 

 

The key takeaway from the session was that gaming should be a key component of ILP1, a course aimed at honing the skill set of interdisciplinary teams to work on a challenge together. The use of gaming simulated the key challenges and benefits of working in an interdisciplinary team.

 

The Curriculum Transformation workstream and ILP design team are now focusing on what games would be the most appropriate to achieve the aims of the course and are working with key staff and societies across the university.
