Hungarian Literature in English Translation: 1969-2007

About the Bibliography

The Bibliography of Hungarian Literature in English Translation: 1969-2007 is an online resource that offers an extensive source of information about Hungarian literature in English translation. It was created with the financial assistance of the Hungarian Book Foundation, Budapest, and also with the help of an earlier minor grant of the Elizabeth Barker Fund of the British Academy.

The database currently has just under 1,800 records. It aims to serve the needs of academic researchers, writers, translators, publishers and readers interested in Hungarian literature, comparative literary studies and translation studies.

What does the Bibliography contain?

It provides a wealth of information on matters of Hungarian literature, including fiction, drama, and, most importantly, lyrical poetry, which has been the best known and most widely translated genre of Hungarian literature.

The Bibliography covers the period 1969-2007, predominantly focusing on texts published in the UK and in Hungary. North-American material has been included when available. The Bibliography lists monograph-length translations of Hungarian fiction and individual poets' volumes. Much effort has been made to list the contents of historical and thematic anthologies of poetry and short fiction, and many periodical items have been listed as well.
