Admissions information
CRCEES aims to create a world-class cadre of researchers who will enhance the UK's understanding of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It will consolidate and develop networks of research and training collaboration across its eight partner institutions. In the coming five years (2006-2010), CRCEES will invest in 19 PhD studentships, 40 Master/PgDip studentships and eight-post doctoral fellowships, creating structured career opportunities and encouraging the next generation of highly skilled researchers into language based area studies.

2009-10 has now ended. However, CRCEES may advertise next year fully-funded studentships to begin in 2010-11. Please check

Research themes are as follows:
- Aspects of identity and culture and their social, political and economic implications, including: contemporary and historical perspectives on gender, ethnicity, nationalism and minority rights, migration and diaspora, identity politics and the effects of linguistic and cultural globalisation; the significance of local history, memory and cultural tradition.
- Economic and social transformation, focusing on: the development of market economies; the changing role of the state; public policy and governance, including regional issues; and the transformation of social structures including aspects of social and economic marginalisation and the development of new elites.
- Political transformation and international relations, including: the implications of EU enlargement; security and foreign policy; the development of civil society; developments in cultural and political discourse.
- Literary, cinematic and cultural developments in the area, including: the role of the mass media in the development of a democratic society and the construction of post-communist cultures and nations; representations of transformation in contemporary literature, media discourse, cinematography and the arts; censorship practices in communist and post-communist societies.
- The politics of language, examining the impact of internationalisation/ globalisation on the written and spoken languages of the region and the implications of translation issues for constructing understandings of the region in the English-speaking world. CRCEES members have produced cutting edge publications in relation to this theme.
CRCEES brings together over 50 internationally acclaimed scholars whose research is relevant to these broad themes. Supervision arrangements will be tailored to best meet student needs. Applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships can be sent by anyone who has completed a doctorate within the past twelve months on a theme and geographical area of relevance to the Centre. PhD and Masters Studentships are subject to ESRC eligibility criteria, which can be found in section 2 of the ESRC Guidance Notes for Applicants.
