Short Description

This course is designed to study data analysis techniques for international innovation strategy and technology management, using patent data. It contains some advanced level of knowledge on quantitative data analysis.

Assessment

Individual essay that includes patent data analysis (max 2500 words). The data analysis will be based on the knowledge foundation and techniques learned from the course and identify the future direction of technology. Also, the essay will contain the discussion of firms' innovation and competitive strategies.

Course Aims

This course aims to introduce students to the topics of technology strategy and data analysis for international entrepreneurs and R&D managers in planning technological products/services. The key topics include patent analysis for catch-up strategy, international knowledge transfer, international standardisation, patent litigation, R&D planning, technological forecasting, technological trajectory. The course also aims to provide the foundation and techniques of data analysis for further study of technology strategy.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Use the foundation and techniques of data analysis for technology strategy

2. Analyse patent data to identify the future direction of technology

3. Critically discuss firms' innovation and competitive strategy

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
