Short Description

This course is the final pre-honours course for students who enter University with prior experience of Latin. It provides practice in reading Latin literature, and in unprepared translation.

One text reading class (2 hours per week), one unseen translation class (1 hour per fortnight) as scheduled on MyCampus

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop your knowledge of Latin grammar, vocabulary and syntax and provide a detailed understanding and appreciation of prescribed literary texts and of the society within which they were written.

■ extend your experience of Latin unseen translation (and as an option, prose composition)

■ give experience in critical examination of Latin literature in the original language

■ foster understanding of the relationship of the texts studied to their cultural context

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Translate passages of original Latin with only minimal linguistic aids, and without prior preparation

Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of Latin vocabulary and Latin grammar

Analyse and comment upon passages from the prescribed authors

Translate and comment upon passages from the set texts after prepared reading, using dictionaries and commentaries

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
