Short Description

In this course the student will learn the key components and techniques of technical examination to support identification of materials and artistic practice used in books and on paper; as well as evaluation of condition and possible causes of degradation. Case studies will form the core of practical workshops in technical examination and in the reconstruction of a replica. This course will also develop the ability of the student to interpret and critically evaluate interdisciplinary material.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

 

■ Provide the student with knowledge of artistic techniques and materials in modern, avant-garde and contemporary artistic practice relevant to books and works on paper.

■ Provide the student with a theoretical and historical context for understanding such techniques, materials and modes of making.

■ Develop the students in the use and understanding on non-destructive analysis to aid interpretation of materials, technique and degradation.

■ Encourage self-reflexive 'deep' learning through engagement with artistic materials, and with critical texts, as well as through participation in seminar discussions.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply and interpret non-destructive analysis to understand materials and techniques.

■ Evaluate a range of techniques and materials used by artists across the historical range covered by the course.

■ Assess the work of relevant artists in detailed and apposite terms

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
