Short Description

The dissertation encourages independent work through deeper study of a particular art historical, or related, problem and encourages the application of acquired research skills in a theoretical or practical contexts. It is expected that MPhil dissertations should make a contribution to some aspect of the subject.

Requirements of Entry

A candidate will be permitted to progress to preparation of the dissertation required by the degree, only if they have obtained a grade point average of 12 (equivalent to C3) or above in the taught courses and placement with at least 75% of the credits at grade D3 or better and all credits at grade F or above

Oral Presentation (10 mins) - 10%

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Develop students' ability to sustain an argument in an area of the student's personal research interest in their chosen subject area.

■ Promote an engagement with other scholarly, critical, or theoretical arguments relevant to that area.

■ Foster the application of acquired research skills to a supervised project.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Define, plan and execute a sustained, focused, coherent and original research project in an area relevant to their subject area

■ Source, select and critically evaluate appropriate primary and secondary material for their chosen subject area and use this material effectively in the final dissertation

■ Work independently and maintain professional conduct in relation to any internal or external institutions or partners involved in the project (if relevant)

■ Apply appropriate academic conventions with regard to referencing and provision of bibliographic information

■ Execute a substantial piece of written work in clear and appropriate academic English, and which demonstrates detailed first-hand knowledge of their chosen area of investigation.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
