Short Description

This course introduces students to advanced research methods and skills for academic and professional contexts, such as archival and interdisciplinary research, and provides a foundation for the dissertation. It introduces key topics such as project management and experimental design, qualitative and quantitative research methods and presentation of research data. Discussions and practical exercises in the taught sessions provide theoretical and applied experience of managing a research project.

Requirements of Entry

A candidate will be permitted to progress to year 2 if they have obtained an average aggregation score of 12 (C3) or above in the taught courses with at least 75% of the credits at Grade D3 and all credits at Grade F or above. Satisfactory completion of the work placement at Grade D3 or above is required to progress to Year 2.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

 

■ Introduce research tools and methodologies for self-directed research in textile and book and paper conservation

■ Develop critical evaluation skills to formulate strong and focussed research questions and to select appropriate research methodologies

■ Provide strategies for successful management of independent research

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Plan a research project within a set of realistic constraints using suitable methodologies

■ Select from the range of research methodologies available and justify their selection for different types of studies

■ Critically evaluate research information from academic sources

■ Use oral and written communication skills, including selecting and presenting information in a clear and coherent manner

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
