Short Description

This course gives students a broad view of conservation with specialism related examples, with an emphasis on collections, rather than the single objects encountered during interventive treatments. It introduces the wider collections management and project management skills conservators need in the workplace.

Timetable

1 x 1hr lecture per week over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

1 x 1hr seminar per week over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

1 x 3 hr external site visit

Requirements of Entry

A candidate will be permitted to progress to year 2 if they have obtained an average aggregation score of 12 (C3) or above in the taught courses with at least 75% of the credits at Grade D3 and all credits at Grade F or above. Satisfactory completion of the work placement at Grade D3 or above is required to progress to Year 2.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

 

■ Promote a greater understanding of the contexts within which textile, works on paper, books and other archival material conservation operate.

■ Develop the skills necessary to manage mixed collections of textiles, works on paper, books and other archival materials.

■ Enhance awareness of the balance between access and preservation within collections

■ Introduce the management of large and small projects

■ Introduce the concept of public engagement and its benefits for the conservation profession

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Identify the challenges involved in managing collections of textiles, works on paper, books and other archival materials.

■ Select and design appropriate measures to enhance the preservation of collections of textiles, works on paper, books, and other archival materials.

■ Employ creative solutions to widen access to the collection

■ Utilise oral and written communication skills suitable for the subject matter and context to fulfil both academic and professional responsibilities. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
