Short Description

The course puts theory and practice into a professional context, complementing the Principles and Practice courses, in particular Principles and Practice: Advanced Skills. It includes case studies of conservation treatments, demonstrating how interventive skills are selected and used for a range of clients including different types of museums.

Requirements of Entry

A candidate will be permitted to progress to year 2 if they have obtained an average aggregation score of 12 (C3) or above in the taught courses with at least 75% of the credits at Grade D3 and all credits at Grade F or above. Satisfactory completion of the work placement at Grade D3 or above is required to progress to Year 2.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

 

■ Provide the student with the opportunity to implement varied and complex interventive treatments to further develop and refine practical skills.

■ Enable the student to synthesise observation, research, analysis and an understanding of cultural and ethical context to formulate appropriate treatment strategies.

■ Embed professional skills appropriate for an emerging conservation practitioner.

■ Consolidate profession communication skills to enable the student to confidently articulate, verbally and in writing.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Identify issues involved in the conservation treatment of a book, archival materials and works of art on paper

■ Analyse and critically evaluate a body of literature relating to a specialist skill, conservation technique or material

■ Utilise oral and written communication skills suitable for the subject matter and context to fulfil both academic and professional responsibilities.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
