Short Description

This course provides an introduction to a range of seminal films produced in two of the most productive and influential periods in German cinema: the Expressionist Films of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933) and the New German Films made between 1962 and 1982. Seminar discussions will focus on the major technical and aesthetic contributions of the crime and horror stories which reflected the German psyche after WW1, and the provocative rejection of the highly commercialised post WW2 cinema in favour of experimental techniques and socially critical, personal expressions of the alienation and anxiety of everyday life in the 60s and 70s.

Assessment

Type of Assessment

Main Assessment In: April/May

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

■ study the genres, styles, themes and aesthetics of Expressionist Film and New German Film
