Short Description

In this course you will have the opportunity to work as part of a team spanning different year groups on an Ultrasonics Engineering research project. The groups will span different academic backgrounds as well as year groups and each group member will be able to apply specialised knowledge in a new context. Each VIP will be co-created by academics, students and external partners, with multiple projects each year covering different end-uses.

2h of contact time / week.

8 lectures of 1h: 6 in semester 1 and 2 in semester 2

11 Tutorial sessions of 2h across 2 semesters (7 in semester 1, 9 in semester 2) - feedback and mentoring sessions

Final report for the project 60%

Oral presentation as a team 20%

Reflective assignment on ILOs (integrated within the student's career professional development pathway document) 10%

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to:

■ Develop confidence and skills in working within a large cross disciplinary group of students at different stages of their degrees on a substantial research style project over a sustained period of time.

■ Experience many different roles on a large design team, interacting and receiving support from more senior students and, in some instances, receive mentoring from PhD students involved in the project.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Design and complete a series of tasks which interface into a larger project.

■ Plan workload in order to deliver tasks on time and within budget.

■ Apply and further develop specialist skills in the students' own disciplines as well as gaining a knowledge of another field.

■ Organise work within the group, interact with the other members of the group to understand their requirements.

■ Evaluate, criticize and communicate findings through written and oral reports

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
