Public Engagement and Teaching in Engineering 4 ENG4201

  • Academic Session: 2023-24
  • School: School of Engineering
  • Credits: 10
  • Level: Level 4 (SCQF level 10)
  • Typically Offered: Runs Throughout Semesters 1 and 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: No

Short Description

This course provides students with the opportunity either to become actively involved in public engagement and outreach activities or to work as a teaching assistant in a secondary school. The first half of the course involves training, planning and preparation for the outreach or teaching activities in the second semester. The second half of the course involves the delivery of the chosen activity. For outreach/public engagement the students will participate in appropriate events that promote STEM in general terms and engineering specifically. For teaching each student will deliver to a class of secondary school pupils a 'special project' that involves a series of lessons investigating a specific area of engineering relevant to the school curriculum.

Timetable

In the first semester, each student enrolled on the course will spend one hour per week undergoing appropriate skills training and planning for teaching, outreach and/or other forms of public engagement.

In the second semester, each student will typically spend one afternoon per week engaged in outreach activities at scheduled events or in the school with which he/she is paired.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade D3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are:

■ to provide Engineering students with the opportunity to gain experience in teaching, outreach and other forms of public engagement in secondary schools and the wider community;

■ to encourage students to consider teaching and public engagement as possible career choices, whilst equipping students with valuable transferable skills associated with communication and knowledge transfer;

■ to provide knowledgeable and enthusiastic engineering students who are able to offer practical teaching assistance, outreach promotion and public engagement with their target audience;

■ to provide UofG with the opportunity to build stronger links with schools and public organisations, thus potentially boosting long-term recruitment into STEM subjects.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Describe their chosen special project topic or promotional material at a level appropriate for a secondary school student and an intelligent layperson

■ Display interpersonal and team-working skills when dealing with colleagues

■ Demonstrate an ability to improvise and adapt so as to deal with unexpected, difficult and potentially disruptive situations

■ Demonstrate organisational, prioritising and negotiating skills

■ Demonstrate public speaking and communication skills

■ Demonstrate knowledge of techniques for teaching and promoting

■ Prepare outreach planning documents or lesson plans, and teaching or promotional materials

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
