This course aims to provide the student with a fundamental appreciation of the relationship between structure and properties of engineering materials.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to:

■ provide the student with a fundamental appreciation of the relationship between structure and properties of engineering materials;

■ give the students practical experience in the application of the engineering principles taught in the lectures.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ build on the concepts introduced in the Materials 1 course, and apply these into the areas of properties and applications of a range of engineering materials;

■ describe the potential and constraints associated with the applications of different classes of materials for various engineering purposes;

■ apply basic laboratory skills and appreciate some of the basic engineering concepts.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must attend the degree examination and submit at least 75% by weight of the other components of the course's summative assessment.

 

Students must attend the timetabled laboratory classes.

 

Minimum of 40% overall mark in Moodle quizzes
