This course aims to provide student teachers with a broad introduction to the field of education. The course will have a particular focus on issues, areas of professional knowledge and foundational concepts and skills significant for teacher education.

This course aims to provide student teachers with a broad introduction to the field of education. The course will have a particular focus on issues, areas of professional knowledge and foundational concepts and skills significant for teacher education.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will have

Been introduced to, and engaged with, foundational ideas in educational sociology, philosophy, psychology, history, and politics.

Reflected on constructions of childhood and the rights of children.

Reflected on the nature of teaching and the role of the teacher

Considered a developmental model of teacher development

Been introduced to theories of learning and cognition

Been introduced to the history of education in Scotland

Been introduced to classroom management and school discipline

Considered the structure and governance of secondary schooling

Sourced and used texts, study material and web-based resources in relation to the above

This Module will address and contribute to the development of the following standards for initial teacher education:
1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 1.2.2, 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 3.1, 3.2.
This Module will require the application and development of transferable skills: TS 2, TS 3, TS 4, TS 6, TS 8, TS 10.
