Short Description

This course introduces you to key theories and thinkers in education. You will be encouraged to explore the aims and purposes of education in modern democratic societies. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own experiences of education in considering the work of influential theorists like John Dewey, A.S. Neill, Nel Noddings, and Paulo Freire.

Timetable

This course will be designed for online learning. Students will have 11 hours of online lecture equivalents, and 10 hours of online synchronous seminars (or online asynchronous equivalent).

Assessment

One 500 word written exploration of a theory from the first half of the course submitted in week 6 (30% of final grade); one 1500 word assignment exploring an educational issue related to the second half of the course submitted in week 11 (70% of final grade).

Course Aims

This course aims to introduce students to:

■ Key educational theories and theorists.

■ The educational concepts of freedom, autonomy, democracy, flourishing, caring, as well as learning as aims of education.

■ Key research and analysis skills in education as a social science.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course you will be able to

■ Critically discuss the aims of education in relation to the concepts covered in the course (freedom, autonomy, democracy, flourishing, caring, learning).

■ Demonstrate understanding of the theories of the educational philosophers discussed in the unit (Neill, Noddings, Freire, Dewey, Biesta).

■ Source, select and discuss appropriate literature to inform your understanding of the education theories explored in the course.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

The minimum requirement for the award of credits is the submission of at least 75% by weight of the course's summative assessment.
