This course aims to facilitate the acquisition, integration and synthesis of research skills, promoting high quality clinical, academic and research standards within a supportive environment.

Assessment of submitted research protocol (1500 words - 20%) - ILO 1, 2, 3, 4

Submission of dissertation (8000 words - 60%) - ILO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

15 minute oral presentation of dissertation (20%) - ILO 5

 

Submission of clinical case compilation (Four cases to be included - 6000 words) - Pass/Fail

Course Aims

This course aims to have students engage in detail with one topic or issue relevant to Endodontology and to present an extended, written argument. It requires them to draw on their knowledge of key concepts and theories gained from other parts of the Endodontology programme, together with their knowledge of research methods and analytical techniques, in order to present a coherent, masters-level submission.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Plan and execute a substantial piece of original research/clinical audit/literature review with the support of a supervisor.

2. Identify the literature relating to a specific topic or issue and to present a synthesis and critical review of that literature.

3. Formulate specific research questions and to identify specific problems deriving from the literature review.

4. Select appropriate research methods to gather data, and to analyse that data using appropriate techniques.

5. Present the findings from their work and to draw appropriate conclusions that relate to the questions or problems identified.

6. Communicate a complex, extended argument effectively in writing using appropriate academic conventions.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment as well as pass the clinical skills competencies.
