Co-requisites

For MRes in Infection and Immunobiology:

■ Research Skills in Infection and Immunobiology

■ Infection and Immunobiology Research Project 1

For MSc in Infection and Immunobiology

■ Research Skills in Infection and Immunobiology

■ Advanced Studies in Infectious Disease

Assessment

Assessment

The project assessment will consist of the following components:

Supervisor's report (35%)

■ An assessment of the student's overall performance in the laboratory will be provided by the project supervisor (attendance and timekeeping, independence, motivation, technical competence, analytical ability, organisational ability) although a second opinion may be sought from the course tutor. Supervisor and student will have a formal meeting to discuss progress

Student's written report (50%)

■ A written report of up to 10,000 words and formatted in the style of an identified scientific journal (e.g. Microbiology) will be submitted in the penultimate week of the project period.

■ The report will be assessed by the Supervisor and a second internal marker and the grade awarded will be an "agreed" mark.

Oral presentation (15%)

■ The oral presentation will consist of a short presentation of the project (followed by questions) to an audience consisting of fellow students and project supervisors towards the end of the project period (week 15 or 16). The presentation will be assessed by two assessors (neither of whom will be the supervisor). The presentation will be judged on the content and visual appearance of the slides, the style of presentation and the quality of answers to questions.

Reassessment

In accordance with the University's Code of Assessment, students are permitted to resubmit on one occasion those items of assessment for which the threshold (C3) has not been reached, where there is a reasonable expectation that they can achieve the pass mark. Students will be permitted to re-submit the written project report and, if necessary, have the opportunity of repeating the oral presentation. The supervisors report will be re-assessed in consultation with the course tutor.  Reassessments will be capped at C3.
