Short Description

Intensive workgroup sessions will aim to develop skills in understanding and identifying structures in songs and develop knowledge of techniques employed in songwriting. Discussions of students' songwriting will be at the centre of the course and will build upon structural analysis of well-known songs. Workshops will include peer critique and in-class writing exercises in order to develop a better understanding of how songs are composed.

 

The course is being tutored by a professional musician and songwriter who is a member of a popular and successful band and also manages other successful recording artists. This makes the course particularly relevant for those interested in music and careers in music.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

To introduce students to the study of songwriting.

To build students' confidence in their ability to interpret set songs.

To enable students to improve their songwriting skills and analysis of song structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Identify traditional compositional elements of songs.

Analyse and interpret essential creative elements of song composition and structure.

Build upon structural analysis of songs in relation to the development of their own songwriting skills.

Identify techniques of songwriting

Employ the knowledge of song structures and the techniques of songwriting learned on the course in their own songwriting.
