A piece of history, 60 years of Engineering Society scarf
Published: 4 December 2019
60 years since the Glasgow University Engineering Society (GUES) scarf was redesigned by Peter Lovie (BSc 1962)
Peter Lovie (BSc 1962) started at the University of Glasgow as an engineering student in 1958. During his time at the University, he joined the Committee of the Glasgow University Engineering Society (GUES) and became the Treasurer. GUES was founded in 1891 with the aim of promoting the study of Engineering and spreading Engineering information among members.
As a new Committee member, Peter redesigned the GUES scarf, brightening up the traditional black with gold stripes, using blue, red and yellow. R. W. Forsyth, a leading department store in the 1960s, made and sold the scarves which were hugely popular.
The Engineering Society is still open to students of the University today.
