General Council

How you can get involved in shaping the future of the University

The General Council was set up by Act of Parliament to give a voice to the views of graduates on the regulation and wellbeing of the University. The General Council plays a key role in the governing of the University. As a graduate of the University or an academic member of staff, you are a member of the General Council. The General Council elects five Assessors to the University Court, the governing body of the University; and works through the General Council Business Committee.

Members of the General Council are entitled to attend its twice-yearly meetings; they take place in January and June. Details of these meetings are appended to this page and also published in Avenue, the twice-yearly magazine for alumni and friends of the University. Other graduate and alumni events can be found on the alumni webpages.

General Council members voted in their thousands in 2006 to elect a new Chancellor for the University. The winning candidate, Professor Sir Kenneth Calman, was officially installed in his new role on 21 June 2006 at the Commemoration Day ceremony.

Meetings of the General Council

Meetings are held at half-yearly intervals (January and June). All General Council members are entitled to attend, i.e. all graduates and academic staff of the University. Notifications of meetings are published in Avenue (the alumni magazine) that members receive twice a year. Avenue is also published at this link.

The next Meeting of the General Council will be held on Saturday 22nd June 2013 at 10.30 for 11 am in the University (venue TBC). Refreshments will be served from 10.30 am.
