Private Press Books in Special Collections

Nonesuch Press

The Monotype Corporation was crucial to the founding of the Nonesuch Press in 1923 by Francis Meynell. Here may be seen the practical application of the private press ethos to commercial publishing: making full use of machine printing, editions were no longer limited and exclusive, but available to a larger public. Meynell used a variety of types and reproduced diverse illustrations, his ideal being to combine beauty of format with moderation in price.
